Google Gemini for macOS Adds Support for Apple Messages

Google’s newest Gemini app update for macOS prepares support for local iMessage integration. The development comes after the application was introduced on Windows last week.

The latest Connected App added to Gemini on Mac is @messages, which allows it to “Read, search, and send messages in Apple Messages.” More specifically, the integration can:

• Send messages to contacts or phone numbers
• Read recent conversations, unread messages, and search message history

This capability can provide additional context by allowing Gemini to retrieve information from conversations. Example prompts include:

• Send a message to John: “Running 5 minutes late!”
• Show my recent messages from Sarah
• Search Messages for dinner reservations

In terms of restrictions, Gemini is unable to:

• Manage group participant membership or modify group chat photos
• Schedule messages for later delivery or modify messages that have already been sent
• Send file, photo, or media attachments (plain text messages only)
• Send tapback reactions (love, like, dislike, laugh, emphasize, question)
• Generate photos or images within automated task workflows

The integration appears under Settings > Connected Apps at the very bottom after updating Gemini for macOS to version 1.116.5.889. However, as of this afternoon, a server-side component appears to be unavailable, meaning @messages is not yet recognized in the prompt box.

Recent Gemini for macOS updates have also introduced a File Providers extension that displays “Add to Gemini” when a file is right-clicked in Finder. Selecting this option immediately places the photo or document into the prompt box. The feature can be activated through Settings > Extensions. Google has also added Images, Videos, and Daily Brief to the side panel.
