iOS 26.4 Adds Two Major CarPlay Features: Ambient Music and Voice Chatbots

Apple has released iOS 26.4, introducing two significant additions to CarPlay: the Ambient Music widget and compatibility with voice chatbots.

To install iOS 26.4 on an iPhone 11 or newer, go to Settings → General → Software Update. Once the iPhone is connected to the vehicle and running iOS 26.4 or later, CarPlay will automatically make the new features available.

Ambient Music Widget

CarPlay introduced widget functionality with iOS 26, allowing users to access widgets by swiping right across the CarPlay interface to reach the Dashboard screen.

With iOS 26.4 now available, the Ambient Music widget has been added to both CarPlay and iPhone.

Apple originally introduced the Ambient Music feature with iOS 18.4 last year. It creates playlists around themes including Sleep, Chill, Productivity, and Wellbeing, and the feature does not require an Apple Music subscription.

To add Ambient Music to the CarPlay widget collection, open Settings → General → CarPlay → [Your car] → Widgets → Add Widget on the iPhone, select Ambient Music, then tap the Add Widget button.

Starting with iOS 26.4, Ambient Music can be used as an independent widget on both iPhone and CarPlay as part of the broader widget collection.

Chatbots and Voice Apps

According to the CarPlay developer guide, iOS 26.4 adds support for voice chatbot applications in CarPlay. This allows chatbots including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude to extend their mobile applications to CarPlay for voice-based conversations, provided their respective developers opt to support the platform.

Siri will, of course, continue to be available through CarPlay without requiring users to launch an application. Apple is also reportedly testing a new Siri app for iOS 27 that could introduce chat-based conversations and conversation history, making it interesting to see whether the app eventually comes to CarPlay with a voice interaction mode later this year.

The iOS 26.4 release gives CarPlay two key new capabilities: the Ambient Music widget and voice chatbot support. Once the update is installed, users can access these additions by following the instructions provided above.
