iOS 27 launched this week as a major update for the iPhone, and here are three new additions that could become some of the most frequently used features for many people.

1: Siri AI Gets a Major Redesign

Regardless of how you may have viewed Siri in the past, the Siri AI introduced with iOS 27 represents something different.

Apple didn’t simply give Siri an AI makeover with a handful of improvements. The company says it “tore [Siri] to the ground” and “rebuilt it from the ground up.”

You can now ask Siri about virtually anything, much like you would ask Google or ChatGPT, and receive informed and useful responses. Siri can also carry out significantly more tasks on your iPhone than it previously could, while functioning smoothly and consistently across your Apple devices. There is also a dedicated Siri app where all of your conversations are stored.

2: Built-In Proofreading Now Checks Grammar Automatically

The iPhone has provided a basic spellcheck function for years, highlighting words it determines have been spelled incorrectly. With iOS 27, Apple is broadening its proofreading capabilities in two ways:

• spellcheck is now driven by Apple Intelligence
• there’s a new tool for checking grammar

With Apple Intelligence powering spellcheck, your iPhone can now recommend alternative words even when the original word is spelled correctly but appears to be used incorrectly in context.

While spelling errors are generally marked with a red underline, recommended word changes and grammar problems appear with a blue underline. Unlike ordinary typing mistakes, this presentation makes the suggestions appear more optional instead of resembling prominent warning indicators.

If you prefer not to use the feature, proofreading can still be turned off through Settings.

3: Spotlight, Photos, and Mail Receive Major Search Improvements

Search is among the most important functions in many apps and is particularly essential across the iPhone itself. In iOS 27, Spotlight search has therefore undergone a substantial redesign.

Along with integrating Siri completely into Spotlight, Apple has rebuilt the iPhone’s systemwide search around a more extensive index of your content that remains continuously updated throughout the day.

As a result, Spotlight should become more useful, delivering improved and more relevant results each time you search. Apple says the same new search foundation used by Spotlight has also been brought to the Photos and Mail apps, improving search functionality across these important applications.
