VFX, Music, and Animated Shorts Shortlists for the 96th Academy Awards Announced

In 10 categories—documentary feature film, documentary short film, international feature film, makeup and hairstyling, music (original score), music (original song), animated short film, live action short film, sound, and visual effects—the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced the shortlists for the 96th Academy Awards.

There are contenders in the animation categories:

ANIMATED SHORT FILM

Fifteen films will advance in the 96th Academy Awards’ Animated Short Film category. There were ninety-three eligible films in the category. A vote among Feature Animation and Short Films Branch members decides the nominees and shortlist. The movies are titled and listed alphabetically: “

  • Eeva
  • Humo (Smoke)
  • I’m Hip
  • A Kind of Testament
  • Koerkorter (Dog Apartment)
  • Letter to a Pig
  • Ninety-Five Senses
  • Once Upon a Studio
  • Our Uniform
  • Pachyderme
  • Pete
  • 27
  • War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko
  • Wild Summon

VISUAL EFFECTS

In the Visual Effects category of the 96th Academy Awards, ten movies are still in the running. The shortlist was selected by the Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee. On Saturday, January 13, 2024, all Visual Effects Branch employees are welcome to watch clips and artist interviews from each of the shortlisted films. Voting by branch members will determine which five movies get final Oscar consideration. The movies, arranged by title and alphabetically, are:

  • The Creator
  • Godzilla Minus One
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
  • Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
  • Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One
  • Napoleon
  • Poor Things
  • Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire
  • Society of the Snow
  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

In addition, the only animated film on the shortlists for Music (Original Song) (“Am I Dreaming”), Music (Original Score), The Boy and the Heron, and Elemental is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Voting on nominations takes place from Thursday, January 11, 2024, to Tuesday, January 16, 2024. On Tuesday, January 23, 2024, the 96th Academy Awards nominations will be revealed.

The Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood will host the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 10, 2024. The ceremony will be broadcast live on ABC and in more than 200 countries around the world.
