The autonomous community of the Region of Murcia, Spain, praises the Day of Murcia every year on the 9th of June. It is a public holiday for the overall population, where schools and most businesses are closed.

When prompting the Day of Murcia, children are generally instructed on the history, geography, and culture of Murcia. On the day itself, numerous individuals riot in celebration and wave the flag of Murcia, while others show the flag on public buildings and private homesteads. The day is ordinarily seen with a few events, including games; common dinners; wine and customary dishes tasting; modern and traditional music concerts; and exhibiting the works of local artists.

The Day of the Region of Murcia (Día de la Región de Murcia) recognizes the proclamation of the Statute of Autonomy on June 9th, 1982.

The death of General Franco in 1975 brought about progress to democracy. As part of the procedure, the Spanish constitution of 1978, allowed restricted autonomy of the nationalities and regions that make up Spain. The territory of Murcia was made an autonomous community on a similar day as La Rioja.

Murcia is situated on the southeast of the Iberian peninsula.

It picked up its name while it was heavily influenced by the Moors, with the city of Murcia established in 825 by the Emir of Cordoba. In the 13th century, it became part of the Kingdom of Castile.

The region is one of the biggest producers of fruits, vegetables, and flowers in Europe.

The area that is presently the Spanish autonomous community of Murcia has been occupied for a large number of years. The Kingdom of Murcia was an independent Islamic state around 1000 CE. It became part of the Almoravid Empire after the battle of Sagrajas in 1086 CE. Murcia became part of the Kingdom of Castile in 1243. The Spanish autonomous community of Murcia is on Spain’s east coast. It has borders with the autonomous communities of:

  • Andalusia.
  • Castile-La Mancha.
  • Valencia.
