Dr Russell Surasky: Revolutionising the health sector with modern medical treatments

Dr Surasky reasearch on opioids has been widely acclaimed

In the past three decades, drug usage has increased sharply. Opioid overdose has been a leading cause of accidental deaths in the USA, surpassing collisions in motor vehicles. During the prehospital phase, a patient’s first exposure to opioids may be a time when anesthesiologists have prominent importance in pain control. Opioids have many unintended side effects, including the potential for misuse or disorder with opioid use. Today, the medications used to treat opiate abuse are Suboxone and Methadone. They tend to be effective in minimising overdoses, but both of them are highly addictive. The brain has little hope of returning to the usual amount of opioids with Suboxone and Methadone.

Reviewing and observing the rising opioid dose and its adverse effects, Dr Surasky innovated a modern treatment programme called Vivitrol. Vivitrol is a once-monthly injection that significantly decreases opioid cravings. Vivitrol is not an opiate, it’s not harmful, and it does not induce physical dependence, unlike Suboxone and Methadone. The fact that a patient taking Vivitrol would not feel high and not get sick if he were to use opiates is even more remarkable. However, the period of the procedure varies, but normally takes around one year.

Dr Surasky is a triple-certified neurologist and is the only physician in the U.S. specialising in chronic pain, mental health and addiction medicine with these qualifications. He provides specialised treatment for all psychiatric conditions, chronic pain and drug and alcohol addiction, using unique medication protocols individualised for each patient. He is also the medical director of “Bridge Back to Life”, a multi-centre drug rehab with locations across New York. Bridge Back to Life Center, has been offering outpatient care for addicted people, as well as education & support for their families and significant others since 1988.

Dr Surasky is also a nationwide speaker on the issue of opioid abuse, educating doctors and the U.S. criminal justice system on addiction and the modern clinical developments. Besides, he is currently the only neurologist in the country to be trained in upper cervical spinal adjustment.

With Vivitrol successfully combatting opioid dependency, Dr Surasky has definitely made a mark in the field of medical science.
