How to Reduce Instagram Tracking and Limit Meta Ads

Instagram can make an advertisement seem almost mind-reading. Visit a product on another website, and an ad promoting that same item can show up in your feed just minutes later. Despite that eerie precision, Meta says it does not use your phone’s microphone to listen to your conversations for ad targeting. Instead, a retailer, application or another company may have provided Meta with information about your visit, purchase or some other interaction.

There is no single master setting that prevents Instagram from gathering or using information. Meta can continue learning from what you search, watch, like, follow, publish and click within Instagram. It also collects device and network details, location-related signals, information supplied by businesses and data shared between connected accounts. In addition, Meta AI can use Facebook and Instagram activity to customize its recommendations. The most effective way to reduce what Instagram can monitor is to review the settings associated with each of these individual data sources.

Disable Personalization Based on Activity From Other Businesses

Meta started introducing a broader Activity from other businesses control in July 2026. It is replacing Your activity off Meta technologies while also expanding an earlier advertising option known as Activity information from ad partners. The new control determines whether businesses can use information they have already provided to personalize advertisements, Feed content and AI responses.

To change this option, open Instagram, visit your profile, tap the three-line menu and enter Accounts Center. Find Activity from other businesses. Since Meta is deploying the control on a country-by-country basis, some accounts may instead still display Ad preferences > Ad settings > Activity information from ad partners. Select the option that stops Meta from using this activity for personalization.

This does not prevent businesses from transmitting information or stop Meta from using activity created within Instagram. Advertisements may still be influenced by accounts you follow, posts or Reels you interact with, searches, ad clicks, profile information or customer lists provided by advertisers. Instead of disabling every form of ad personalization, this setting prevents activity occurring outside Meta’s platforms from influencing your advertising experience.

Within the European Region, Accounts Center also provides personalized or less-personalized advertising options under Ad preferences > Ad settings > Ad experience. The latter choice relies on fewer signals, although Meta says it may still use information including age, location, device details, ad interactions and content displayed during the current session.

Reduce Instagram’s Permissions on Your Phone and Connected Accounts

On an iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and disable Instagram’s permission. Apple’s Ask App Not to Track option prevents tracking across apps and websites operated by other companies for advertising or information sharing with data brokers. It does not prevent Instagram from logging activity that occurs within its own application.

On Android devices, the route is generally Settings > Apps > Instagram > Permissions. Check permissions for location, contacts, photos and videos, camera and microphone, and reject access that you do not require. Disabling location eliminates one direct source of information, but Meta can still approximate your whereabouts using an IP address, network data, device signals and activity associated with your account.

Contact synchronization requires a separate review. Go to Accounts Center > Your information and permissions > Upload contacts, choose the Instagram account and disable Connect contacts on all devices. This prevents additional contact syncing, but it does not erase contacts that have already been uploaded. To delete those existing contacts, use Manage contacts in Accounts Center through Instagram.com. Meta says the deletion process can require up to 90 days.

Meta also draws on information between accounts connected to the same Accounts Center for ad personalization and account-follow suggestions. Removing an account through Accounts Center > Accounts disconnects it from that Accounts Center, although this may turn off shared sign-ins and other linked features. It does not remove the account itself or erase information already associated with it.

Reduce What Meta Can Derive From AI Conversations

Meta began treating interactions with its AI features as signals for content and advertising personalization on December 16, 2025, across most regions. For instance, a discussion about hiking could later contribute to recommendations involving hiking-related posts or products. However, Meta did not create a dedicated control allowing users to continue conversations with Meta AI while preventing those conversations from being used in this way.

There are, however, two cleanup commands available within Instagram AI chats. Enter /reset-ai to erase that AI’s copy of the conversation and the information it retained, or use /reset-all-ais to reset every AI conversation in the application. The conversation that remains visible to you will stay there until you delete it separately. These commands remove stored context, but they do not function as opt-outs from advertising, standard data collection or model training.

Model training is distinct from personalization. In regions where Meta relies on legitimate interests, the company uses public posts and comments from adult accounts, together with interactions involving its AI features, to improve generative AI models. Users in the EU and UK can object through Meta’s Privacy Center, and that option is not available as a universal Instagram setting.

Avoid entering names, addresses, financial information, medical details or anything else you would not make public into a Meta AI conversation. After a discussion that you do not want the AI to retain, use the reset commands, and submit the objection form in regions where it is offered.
