Football fans must endure the preseason before enjoying the NFL regular season, the most important event on the sports calendar. In 2025, the NFL Hall of Fame Game will resume preseason play between two teams that haven’t faced off in the annual exhibition game for more than 3 decades.
It’s also a crucial step in the process. In addition to giving starters some live reps, teams can assess the rest of their roster before reducing it in time for the season.
Even while teams report to training camp, many fans consider the Hall of Fame game to be the true opening of the NFL preseason. Usually, at least one of the players in that year’s Hall of Fame matchup has some connection to the teams selected for that game.
The NFL increased the regular season to 17 games in 2021, and in doing so, eliminated one of the weeks of the preseason in the process. Most players thought the preseason was too long in the first place. To prepare for the regular season, starters often play a few minutes in the first preseason game, more in the second, and the rest in the final. Only the clubs competing in the Hall of Fame game presently play four preseason games.
The Los Angeles Chargers will travel to Canton, Ohio, in late July to face the Detroit Lions. The interconference exhibition will kick off the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s week of celebrations ahead of the induction of its four-person class of 2025, which includes former Chargers tight end Antonio Gates.
With the rest of the preseason schedule starting in early August, the game also marks the start of in-game action for the 2025 league year.
Date: July 31, Thursday
Time: 8:00 PM ET
Location: Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, Canton, Ohio
The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s “Enshrinement Week” festivities will go off on July 31 with this year’s Hall of Fame game. NBC will broadcast the game to local affiliates and stream it on Peacock.
Los Angeles head coach Jim Harbaugh and Detroit star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson are traveling to Canton, Ohio, which is two hours away from Ohio State’s campus, for this year’s Hall of Fame game. Both clubs have ties to Michigan football. The annual exhibition game has not been played by a team since 1994, according to the Hall of Fame website.
Chargers star and former tight end Antonio Gates, along with Eric Allen, Jared Allen, and Sterling Sharpe, will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s class of 2025 two days after the game.
Here is a look at the full 2025 NFL preseason schedule.
Start date: July 31, Thursday
End date: August 24, Sunday
The 2025 NFL preseason will begin with this year’s Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. This year’s Hall of Fame game will feature the Lions and the Chargers. Usually, the opponents are tied to the HOF class of that year. Antonio Gates, a veteran tight end with the Chargers who entered his second year of eligibility, would be that player for 2025.
A few games will be selected each week of the preseason to be televised nationally on CBS, Fox, NBC, ESPN, or Amazon Prime. While viewers can watch teams in their local markets through local network affiliates, NFL Network will also broadcast a few games.
NFL+, which also features out-of-market games, is one streaming alternative. Fubo is an additional option for nationally televised games and provides a free trial.
