Major events involving Canadian athletes occurred in 2023, ranging from Hall of Famers competing in their final games to up-and-coming heroes winning their first titles. Let’s look at Complex Canada’s top Canadian sports stories from the current season.

Nick Taylor, a golfer, wins the Canadian Open

Although Nick Taylor has already won twice on the PGA Tour, this year’s victory was truly historic. The largest PGA event in Canada, the RBC Canadian Open, was won by Taylor, the first Canadian to do so since 1954.

On the fourth playoff hole, Taylor defeated Tommy Fleetwood with style, making a 72-foot eagle putt to win. His celebratory club-throwing will serve as the official tournament logo for the following year because it was such a significant occasion for Canadian golf.

Legend of Soccer Christine Sinclair Engages in Her Last Match

Chrisina Sinclair, the all-time leading goal scorer in international football, represented Canada in her final game on home soil against Australia. The 40-year-old Burnaby, British Columbia native won 1-0 to cap off her career.

In Vancouver, 48,112 spectators set a record for the biggest crowd in Canadian history for a women’s soccer friendly. The stadium was renamed in her honor for one night only. For many generations to come, she will serve as an inspiration to Canadian soccer players.

The first Billie Jean King Cup is won by Canada

Tennis history in Canada is being written for yet another year. The Canadian women’s tennis team, which included Heidi El Tabakh, Leylah Fernandez, Rebecca Marino, Eugenie Bouchard, Marina Stakusic, and Gabriela Dabrowski, was the tournament underdog but went on to win the world championship by defeating Spain, Poland, Czechia, and Italy.

The Men of Canada Win The Bronze Medal in the FIBA World Cup

At the 2023 FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup, the senior men’s national team from Canada created history by winning the bronze medal—their first-ever medal in a world cup.

The squad played against some of the best basketball players in the world during the competition, including their rivals on team USA in the bronze medal match. After that, Canada defeated Team USA 127-118 to secure a podium position. With Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Dillon Brooks, and Lu Dort at the forefront, the team was loaded.

With the win, Canada ended a 24-year drought at the Summer Games and secured a spot in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Denver wins Jamal Murray’s first NBA championship

An NBA Championship team features a Canadian player for the second year running. In five games, Jamal Murray and the Denver Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat to become the 2023 NBA Champions. The native of Kitchener and his squad had the best record in the Western Conference going into the playoffs, and they ended up winning the NBA championship with just three postseason losses.

After Murray missed the previous season due to an ACL injury sustained in April 2021, his lifelong dream has finally come true. At this point, Murray stands as the ninth Canadian NBA champion.
