Nour El-Sherif: Google Doodle celebrates Egyptian actor’s 75th birthday

Nour El-Sherif was born Mohamad Geber Mohamad Abd Allah (محمد جابر محمد عبد الله‎) on April 28, 1946 in Cairo, Egypt. He was an actor, director and producer, known for Leila Sakhina (1995), El Ragol El Akhar (1999) and El Hag Metwali’s Family (2001).

Nour El-Sherif (نور الشريف‎) was born in the working-class neighborhood of Sayeda Zainab in Cairo. As a child, he loved soccer. He played soccer prior to picking acting as a career. Notwithstanding, it was eclipsed by his passion for acting, which he first supported in smy theater roles.

It wasn’t long before the talent Nour El-Sherif showed in rehearsal for “Romeo and Juliet” grabbed the eye of famous Egyptian director Hassan Imam, who cast him in “Kasr El Shawk” (“The Palace of Desire, 1967”)— El-Sharif’s first film.

Nour El-Sherif’s silver screen debut set up for a notable career. Nour El-Sherif is sometimes credited as Nour El Cherif, Nour El-Cherif or Nour Al-Sharif.

Among Nour El-Sherif’s significant works include his lead role for the 1982 film “Hadduta Misriya” (“An Egyptian Story”), as well as the 1991 film “Nagui Al-Ali,” in which he depicted a Palestinian cartoonist.

Something other than an actor, El-Sherif likewise directed theater and movie, making his cinematic directorial debut with the 2001 film “Al-Asheqan” (“The Lovers”).

Nour El-Sherif was famous for the attention he immersed his art and his commitment earned awards from prestigious institutions across Arab entertainment.

The Alexandria International Film Festival, which El-Sherif had worked together with since its origin, honoured him with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.

Nour El-Sherif (نور الشريف‎) died from lung cancer at 69 years old on August 11, 2015, after a serious battle with the disease in Cairo, Egypt.
