Top 7 Most Reliable Japanese Cars on the Market

Japanese automobiles have a longstanding reputation for being more dependable and fuel-efficient than those made in the United States or Europe. These days, things are different because a lot of Japanese automobiles are made in the United States.

According to Statista, U.S. factories produced about 2.82 million vehicles for Japanese automakers in 2022. Research indicates that this does not lessen their reliability, though.

Japanese automobiles accounted for seven out of 10 spots on Consumer Reports’ list of the most reliable cars for 2023.

U.S. News & World Report praised Japanese cars for their dependability as well, giving them scores of eight or higher overall across all assessment categories. According to the report, “Japanese cars still carry many of the characteristics that made them a hit in the U.S. decades ago.”

GOBankingRates has identified seven of the most reliable Japanese cars currently on the road, based on research conducted online, including lists of the best Japanese cars at websites like Consumer Reports, MotorBiscuit.com, carVertical, and HotCars.

  1. Honda Civic

Websites for auto enthusiasts like MotorBiscuit.com have given Honda excellent ratings for reliability. Both the Civic and the Accord have “low annual repair and maintenance costs,” according to the website.

To determine which model is more dependable, the Civic or the Accord, you could toss a coin. Honda managed to escape the “least reliable” list this year, but surprisingly none of its models made the list. HotCars’ list of the most reliable Japanese cars places the Honda Civic at the top, citing the car’s 50-year history of performance and dependability.

  1. Honda Accord

Drivers searching for fashionable, fuel-efficient cars ranging from family sedans to SUVs and minivans have long recognized Honda’s reliability. One of HotCars’ primary selling points, according to the company, is the low annual maintenance and repair costs of just $400.

The Honda Accord frequently appears on lists of the best-selling cars, such as the top SUVs, trucks, and cars according to Car and Driver for the first half of 2023. Car and Driver claims that although it has undergone an aesthetic makeover in 2023, its dependability is still unrivaled. It has a better than 27% probability of lasting over 250,000 miles, which is more than three times longer than the typical passenger car, according to iSeeCars.com.

  1. Toyota Corolla

With an overall score of 88 and a reliability rating of 93, the Toyota Corolla Hybrid is ranked as the most reliable car by Consumer Reports. It ranks first among compact cars as well. Additionally, the gas-powered Corolla (reliability rating: 81) was included in the CR list.

A smooth ride, years of driving enjoyment, and a sticker price that’s affordable at a little over $21,000 await you with the Toyota Corolla, regardless of whether you choose the hybrid or the already fuel-efficient gas model.

  1. Toyota Camry

Experts gave the family-friendly Camry, the larger brother of the Toyota Corolla, high marks for reliability as well. On their list of the most reliable Japanese cars, HotCars gave it a ranking of No. 7, describing it as “easily one of the most reliable cars ever.”

On its list of cars likely to last more than 250,000 miles, iSeeCars.com ranked the Toyota Camry 23rd, meaning that it has a 20.4% higher chance of lasting longer than the average car.

  1. Mazda MX-5 Miata

As we looked into reliable Japanese automobiles, the Mazda MX-5 Miata kept coming out on top. A sleek, two-seater sports car may not seem like the best option for reliability, but Consumer Reports gave it an 85.

The MX-5 is a fun, economical, and fuel-efficient car, but its small trunk makes it unsuitable for long road trips or even as a family car. While it might be dependable, most people won’t find it to be entirely useful. However, because of its dependability, it might be the kind of car that you have used for weekend travel for decades in your family.

  1. Toyota Prius

Nearly all experts commend Toyota vehicles for their dependability, handling, and fuel efficiency. Consumer Reports gave the Prius an 89 reliability rating, and it appeared on numerous online lists of the most dependable Japanese vehicles. For years of enjoyable driving, the Prius combines efficiency, smooth handling, and a budget-friendly price with a starting sticker price under $25,000.

  1. Lexus GX 2023

At the top of our list of the most reliable Japanese cars is the Lexus GX. Designed for off-road adventures, the large-body SUV received a reliability score of 91 and an overall score of 75 from Consumer Reports, placing it as the second-best luxury mid-sized third-row SUV. With its cutting-edge technology and 6,500 lbs. of towing capacity, along with the legendary dependability that Lexus is known for, the GX is the ideal family car for long road trips, camping trips, or matchdays at the soccer field.
