Complete explanation on Lumbar disc, disc rupture, and Lumbar disc herniation. According to Dr. Iman Kamali Hakim
- Lumbar disc
- Lumbar disc herniation
- Lumbar disc protrusion
- disc rupture
Which one is the correct term?
All four terms are used in the same meaning, but we all have Lumbar disc
But Lumbar disc herniation, lumbar disc protrusion, disc rupture are the cases that show symptoms and need diagnostic and therapeutic measures.
In general, a hernia protrusion or rupture of the lumbar disc occurs when the central core of the disc puts pressure on the outer layers and puts pressure on the spinal nerves.
As the rupture or protrusion of the disc continues, the inflammation may cause more pain, muscle weakness, and pain in the back of the buttocks and even to the ankles.
In more severe cases, which is considered an emergency to care for these patients, the patient may lose urinary or fecal control or have a sore ankle.
Pain from lumbar disc protrusion usually worsens with sitting and bending over and gets better with walking.
There is a common belief that a disc herniation is caused only by lifting heavy objects, while people who have sedentary lifestyles and jobs with long-time stays, such as bank employees, drivers, people in wheelchairs, etc., have a high chance of having a disc herniation.
