World Football Day: History and Significance of the Day
World Football Day is observed annually on May 25 to honor the sport’s global reach and its influence in several areas, such as trade, commerce, diplomacy, and peace. The celebration aims to establish a cooperative environment. On May 25, 1924, at the Summer Olympic Games in Paris, the first international football tournament with teams from all regions was played. The world celebrates this event’s 100th anniversary in 2024. The United Nations General Assembly declared May 25 to be World Football Day on May 7, 2024, in observance of this milestone.
Football Game
Football, sometimes known as soccer, is the world’s most popular sport. Football originated in England in the Middle Ages. Nonetheless, modern football originated in England in the 19th century. In England, the Football Association was established in 1863 and was largely responsible for creating the game’s regulations.
Established in 1902, FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) progressively emerged as the global football governing body. FIFA boasts 211 members, surpassing the number of United Nations members.
Football is the most popular sport in the world, but if you were a fan and thought we didn’t have a special day to celebrate Jogo bonito, or “the beautiful game,” your worries are over because the UN General Assembly passed a resolution on Tuesday designating May 25 as World Football Day.
The Resolution and Its Significance
“The global reach of football and its impact in various spheres, including commerce, peace, and diplomacy,” is acknowledged in the resolution. It emphasizes how football promotes collaboration and recognizes the vital role that national and regional soccer federations, as well as the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), play in advancing the sport.
The resolution calls on all nations to embrace football and other sports as means of advancing development, peace, and women’s and girls’ empowerment. Additionally, it calls for the implementation of policies and programs that support football and physical activities.
Global Observance of World Football Day
By national priorities, World Football Day is observed by all member states, UN system entities, international organizations, academia, civil society, and the private sector. Through educational and public awareness-raising initiatives, the benefits of football are intended to be widely distributed.
Why May 25th?
To mark the 100th anniversary of the first-ever international football tournament held during the Summer Olympics in Paris in 1924, May 25th was selected. This momentous event was the ideal occasion to commemorate football’s widespread popularity because it was a major turning point in the game’s history.
According to the resolution, the UN chose May 25 as the date for World Football Day celebrations each year because it commemorates the 100th anniversary of the first international football competition ever held with participation from every region, which took place on May 25, 1924, during the summer Olympic Games in Paris.
The Adoption of the UN Resolution
More than 160 countries co-sponsored the resolution, which was warmly received by the 193-member General Assembly. The resolution was submitted by Libya’s UN Ambassador, Taher El-Sonni, who emphasized football’s role as a universal language that cuts across barriers of socioeconomic level, nationality, and culture. El-Sonni emphasized how important football is for advancing social inclusion, gender equality, unity, tolerance, and respect for one another.
The resolution calls on every country to embrace football and other sports as a means of advancing development, peace, and women’s and girls’ empowerment. Additionally, it pushes countries to implement policies and programs that support football and other sports and physical exercise.
