Google has recently declared the Chrome OS Flex, a web-based operating system that gives fast access to web applications and virtualization. It has a similar codebase and release rhythm as Chrome OS, however gives a few specific benefits over its predecessor.

- Chrome OS gadgets contain a Google security chip that assists with protecting the system yet Chrome OS Flex gadgets don’t as the OS is downloadable on third-party systems.
- Chrome OS gadgets directly deal with their updates while Chrome OS Flex updates are given by original equipment manufacturers.
- One of the biggest differences and disadvantages to Chrome OS Flex is that it doesn’t support Android applications or Google Play.
