A New Frontier in Home Viewing: Watch Every Star Trek Movie in 4K HDR For the First Time Ever
Every Star Trek movie can now be purchased or rented in the latest 4K and HDR standards for the first time. This includes all six movies with the cast of the original series, all four movies with the cast of The Next Generation, and the more recent J.J. Abrams movies.
Star Trek Generations, Star Trek First Contact, Star Trek Insurrection, and Star Trek Nemesis were all included in a special UltraHD Blu-ray set that Paramount released along with several special features on April 4. The set is the first time these movies have been made available on home video in 4K and HDR. The films were also made available on on-demand storefronts like Apple’s TV app, in addition to Blu-rays.
The original series films, which included Star Trek The Motion Picture, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, all received the same treatment this past year. The reboot films (Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Star Trek Beyond) have for some time been available in modern formats.
So as of this current week, every one of the 13 dramatically released Star Trip films is at long last accessible in 4K and HDR. In addition to Dolby Vision HDR, the most recent versions also support the audio standard Dolby Atmos.
However, a significant swaths of the classic Trek TV series is not even available in HD, much less in 4K or HDR. In recent years, Blu-ray and digital HD releases of all seven seasons of The Original Series, Enterprise, and the Animated Series, as well as all of the brand-new Paramount+ shows, were made available. However, only a standard definition is currently available for Voyager and Deep Space Nine.
Small HD segments were used in a recent Deep Space Nine documentary to demonstrate what might be possible, and there have also been fan projects to do the same with AI. On the other hand, there hasn’t been much progress made on an official project to upscale the full series.
