Google Introduces Redesigned Google Health Coach for Personal Wellness Goals
The Fitbit app will be replaced by the Google Health app, according to Google, which is also releasing the Google Health Coach after releasing a Public Preview last year and continuously improving it based on user feedback.
Google said on Thursday that it is rebranding its Fitbit app as Google Health and releasing an AI-powered health coach as a subscription service, in addition to unveiling the new Fitbit Air, a Whoop-like fitness band.
As part of the Google Health Premium subscription, Google Health Coach will go out of preview on May 19 and be accessible worldwide.
Building on its 2021 acquisition of Fitbit, which saw the tech giant venture into fitness wearables to supplement its more versatile Android smartwatches, the Health app will become a key part of Google’s fitness strategy.
The new Google Health Coach will provide consumers with personalized insights by utilizing Google’s Gemini AI to function as a fitness coach, sleep specialist, and health and wellness advisor. According to the company, the service has been in public preview since last year and has been improved in response to customer comments.
On May 19, the day the new Fitbit Air goes on sale, Google said the Health app will be accessible worldwide as part of the Google Health Premium subscription.
The Google Health Premium (formerly Fitbit Premium) subscription, which costs $9.99 per month or $99 annually, will be included with the AI fitness coaching service. Google Health Premium will be available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers at no additional cost.
According to Google, the health coach service is customized for the user through an onboarding process where you will describe your daily routine, your health goals, the type of exercise equipment you have access to, any injuries the coach should be aware of, and other aspects of your lifestyle. These specifics will then be used by the coach to develop tailored advice and insights.
Additionally, users can customize and update their goals or personal information at any time by interacting with the coach in natural language.
Additionally, they can dictate to it or upload files or photos to record their workouts, meals, and health information.
The Google Health app’s Today tab will provide access to the coach. The company points out that any insights the coach offers won’t be merely a summary; rather, they will incorporate data from several sources, such as environment, nutrition, cycle tracking, fitness and sleep metrics, and U.S. medical records (if access is provided). According to Google, the nutrition, mental health, and cycle tracking features have all been updated for the health coach.
The redesigned Today tab, which home the Coach’s proactive insights, is the focal point of this experience.
The Google Health Coach is doing the heavy lifting for you, cutting through the noise, looking ahead, and providing timely insights and nudges to help you reach your goals. It’s not just recounting what you did yesterday.
The Coach makes connections throughout your shared data ecosystem to provide you with the best advice possible, including:
- Fitness and sleep metrics
- Nutrition and cycle tracking
- Environmental context like location and local weather
- Personal medical records
Other sections of the Google Health app, such as the Fitness tab’s exercise recommendations and guidance, the Sleep tab’s sleep tracking, and the Health tab’s summary of your metrics, are also including the AI-powered coach.
Enhancing the Google Health experience as a whole
Every aspect of the Google Health app is enhanced by the Coach’s intelligence, which transforms past data into useful tools while driving the daily experience on the Today tab.
- The Fitness tab: This now serves as your “Weekly Plan.” You can use natural language to build and save completely customized exercises, as well as receive customized workout recommendations, rather than merely recording steps or workouts.
- The Sleep tab: In addition to monitoring the number of hours you sleep, the Coach assists you in understanding how consistently you sleep each week and monitors your real progress toward getting better, more rejuvenating sleep.
- The Health tab: You can now ask the Coach to compile and deliver concise summaries of your personal health records, making complicated medical information simple to understand, in addition to seeing a clear summary of your primary health records.
According to the firm, Google’s health coach will first be accessible to a limited number of Fitbit and Pixel Watch customers, with support for additional devices to follow. To begin, though, anyone may download the Google Health app. Google has not specified when the coach will be ready for those without a Fitbit or Google Pixel Watch.
Pricing and accessibility
When the new Fitbit Air hits store shelves on May 26, the Google Health Coach will reach 100% availability. The rollout will begin on May 19. At just $9.99 per month or $99 per year, it includes a Google Health Premium subscription (formerly Fitbit Premium). Google Health Premium is now available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers at no additional cost, giving them even more value. First available to qualified Fitbit and Pixel Watch customers, the Coach will soon be compatible with additional devices. If you don’t have a Google Pixel Watch or Fitbit device, you will be informed when the Coach is ready for you. Anyone can download the app to begin and sign up.
